Vocational Education Training

Applies to Certificates I, II, III or IV (except ELICOS), VET diploma, VET advanced diploma, vocational graduate certificate or vocational graduate diploma courses.

Higher education (Graduate / Post Graduate /PhD)

Applies to a bachelor degree, associate degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, higher education diploma, higher education advanced diploma or masters by coursework.

Postgraduate research
Applies to Masters by research or a doctoral degree

English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)

Applies to stand-alone English language courses that lead to a certificate I, II, III or IV, or that result in no formal Australian award.

Student Guardians
Parents or relatives can apply for a visa to stay in Australia as the guardian of a student who is studying in Australia.

Other Categories include:

  • Primary or secondary school course: Applies to primary, junior secondary or senior secondary school courses, and approved secondary school exchange programs.
  • Non-award: Applies to non-award foundation studies, or other full-time courses or components of courses not leading to an Australian award.
  • AusAID and Defence: Applies to students sponsored by AusAID or the Australian Department of Defence undertaking full-time courses of any type.

Student visa (sub class 500)

A student visa allows the applicant to stay in Australia to study full-time course at a recognised education institution.

The applicant must be:

  • be at least six years of age
  • have been accepted to study at an educational institution in Australia
  • have health insurance.

Visas are granted for a period of up to years.

Applicants are required to be enrolled on a course of study that is registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and courses for Overseas for Overseas Students (CRICOS). For applicants applying from outside Australia, a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for each intended course of study is required to be submitted with the visa application. A letter of offer from the education provider will not be accepted.

Student guardian visa (sub class 590)

This visa allows applicants to stay in Australia as the guardian of an international student younger than 18 years of age studying in Australia on a student visa.
The applicant is required to prove that they are:

  • at least 21 years of age
  • the student’s parent, legal guardian or relative
  • have enough money to support yourself and the student during your stay
  • be able to provide accommodation and other support
